Atonement (2007) Film

Benedict as Paul Marshall in the tragic story of two sisters whose lives radically change because of a lie.

Atonement is a British drama film based on the 2001 novel by Ian McEwan.
The film had its world premiere on 29 August 2007 as the opening film of the International Film Festival of Venice, its director Joe Wright was just 35 years old and therefore the youngest director ever who was honored by this.

The film received 28 awards and 79 nominations, among other things the Oscar for best film music (2008), the BAFTA Film Awards for Best Film and Best Production (2008) and two Golden Globes (2008).

In 2008, the green dress that actress Keira Knightley wears in the film was selected as the most beautiful costume in film history ever by the major U.S. fashion magazine In Style – and so relegated Marilyn Monroe’s famous white holder-neck-dress (from The Seven Year Itch) to second place and Audrey Hepburn’s elegant little black Dress  (from Breakfast at Tiffany’s) to rank 3.

In this tragic story Benedict Cumberbatch can be seen as Paul Marshall.

What is it about:
In 3 parts, which are connected through flashbacks, the story of a wealthy family in an English country house between the 30s and 90s is told. When the 13 year old Briony Tallis, who would like to become a writer, is writing down one of her stories, she observes through the window a supposedly incriminating situation between her sister Cecilia and the housekeeper’s son, Robbie Turner. Briony herself is secretly in love with Robbie – and by reporting her perception of what she saw a tragic tale of misunderstandings begins, which changes the fate of the two sisters fundamentally.
