Benedict’s earliest radio work: a radio adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Mansfield Park.
The 2003 adaptation of Mansfield Park was directed by Sally Avens, Benedict Cumberbatch and David Tennant can be heard as the quite differing brothers Edmund and Tom, cousins of the main character. The adaptation is one of the earliest radio work Benedict has done.
What is it about:
It is the story of Fanny Price, one of nine children. Due to financial difficulties of her family she is sent to her wealthy uncle and aunt, Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram, to be raised in a better surrounding.
There she lives together with her two cousins, the brothers Tom and Edmund. Whilst Tom is a profligate gambler and has a quite ill-reputed character, Edmund is gentle and kind – and Fanny starts a romantic relationship with him. From now on, Fanny struggles to be the social equal of her adoptive family and those in their circle, however, she is the moral centre of the story.
