Starter for Ten is originally a novel by David Nicholls from the year 2003.

In 2006, the story was adapted for film and had its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2006. On 10 November 2006 Starter for 10 was aired in UK and Ireland. The film received several nominations and won the 2006 Audience Award in the category Advanced Screening.

Benedict Cumberbatch plays Patrick Watts in this funny comedy. Furthermore Mark Gatiss plays a role, who excels as Sherlock’s brother Mycroft Holmes later.

What is it about
The story is set in 1985 and revolves around Brian Jackson, a freshman at the University of Bristol. Since his childhood he has loved the quiz show “University College” (the well-known call “Your starter for 10″ gives the film its title), and so Brian tries to get into the Bristol Team for University Challenge. He meets Alice, a provocative, superficial blonde, with whom he falls in love head over heels. Although he would be much better suited to his best friend Rebecca, whose wit and wisdom he particularly appreciates – and who loves him. And then the grand finale show of the Challenge is coming up – and for Brian the stakes are high…
