The Cocktail Party (2005) Audio

Benedict as Peter Quilpe in a drama about a failed marriage and false realities by T.S. Eliot

The Cocktail Party, written by T.S. Eliot, is a stage play and was first performed in Edinburgh in 1949.

The story describes the failing marriage of Edward and Lavinia Chamberlayne.
Lavinia leaves Edward before the cocktail party, which she had planned for a long time, actually begins. Edward is now facing the challenge to explain to guests why Lavinia is not present. But much to his surprise she is brought back to the party by an “unknown host”.
The details of the drama become only apparent through conversations during the party. Both learn that they have been fooling themselves, and are now faced with the reality.

Broadcast by BBC Radio 4 in 2005, Benedict Cumberbatch plays the role of Peter Quilpe who is having an affair with Lavinia, but would rather be in relationship with Celia, Edwards mistress.
