The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) Film

The-Hobbit

With Performance capture technology Benedict becomes the dragon Smaug and the Necromancer in The Hobbit

The Hobbit is based on the fantasy novel written by JRR Romanvorlange Tolkien, piblished first on 21 September 1937 by George Allen & Unwin. Later, the novel was completed by The Lord of the Rings.

The three-part film adaptation represents the prequel to the film trilogy Lord of the Rings, both triologies are directed by Peter Jackson. Jackson also serves as producer and co-author of The Hobbit.

In the first step, the novel should be produced in only two films, but Jackson opted for another trilogy: The Hobbit – An Unexpected Journey (world premiere on 28 November, 2012), The Hobbit – The Desolation of Smaug (start 13 December, 2013) and The Hobbit – There and Back Again (expected December 2014) .

The first part has already been nominated for three Oscars, won 42 international awards and 4 nominations, including 2 for Martin Freeman (as the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins): the Empire Award for Best Actor as well as well as the MTV Movie Award for Best hero.

In the exciting fantasy adventure Benedict Cumberbatch can be seen as the dragon Smaug, doing great acting by so-called Performance Capture. This technology is a advancement of the motion-capture technology, which scans not only body movements but also facial expressions of the actor.
Benedict also gives his voice to the figure of the Necromancer (in Tolkien’s original also Sauron, Lord of Mordor).

What is it about:
We are located in the Shire, in the western part of the fictional continent of Middle-earth. There the hobbits are living, small, cozy, peaceful human-like creatures. One of them, Bilbo Baggins, lives in comfort in his spacious, picturesque cave – until one day the wizard Gandalf is standing in front of his door, in the wake of 13 dwarves, bringing Bilbo’s peaceful life completely upside down. Bilbo shall accompany the strange group on an adventurous journey to help the dwarves to regain back their kingdom and their treasure that the evil dragon Smaug stole. Bilbo is anything but excited and unwilling to change his peaceful existence for an arduous journey into the unknown, which sounds as adventurous as dangerous. But his curiosity finally wins, and so he is on the way to a long journey to a distant land in the east of Middle-earth, attending the wizard Gandalf, the legendary fighter and king Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the dwarves, and his entourage on a long journey to a distant land in the east of Middle-earth.

The Hobbit migrates through barren and eerie landscapes, encounters murderous and mystical creatures such as orcs, giant trolls and wonderful elves. And experiences his fateful encounter with the creature that will change his life – Gollum.

He takes the Gollum’s “treasure”, a golden ring, and the adventure finally begins …
