In George Farquhar’s play The Recruiting Officer Benedict plays Mr. Worthy for the BBC radio adaptation.

In 2004 Benedict Cumberbatch read the role of Mr. Worthy in George Farquhar’s play The Recruiting Officer for the BBC.

1704. Captain Plume returns to the town of Shrewsbury and tries with the help of Sergeant Kite to attract new recruits. Here he meets Silvia again, who he has already romanced during one of his previous visits, and he also meets his friend Worthy, who fell in disgrace with his lover Melinda after she has come into possession of a heritage that clearly beats Worthy’s 500 pounds and his affections towards her.
Determined in their plan that Silvia and Plume can not become an item, Melinda warns Silvia’s father about Plumes intentions. Hereupon Silvia is taken out of the city by her father with the order that she is not allowed to marry anyone without his consent. Unimpressed, Silvia returns to the city, disguised as a man, and gets legally recruited by Captain Plume.

Benedict’s colleague in Sherlock Mark Gatiss (Mycroft Holmes) was also part of the same play in a stage adaptation at the Donmar Warehouse in 2012. He played the role of Captain Brazen.
